To play, or not to play !??

Looks like game 6 is going to be postponed til tomorrow, but if the rain holds off long enough for these teams to get it in, we here at World Series Heroes headquarters are going with the Cardinals.

We were originally going to go with the Rangers and Colby Lewis as we did in our game 2 winner, but a good friend of mine(lets call him BF66 for conversation sake) told me the other night that the Series is going 7 games. Now I don't normally let someone's opinion or comment sway my decision when it comes to putting my money down, but he was adamant and seemed to know what he was talking about !? It got me thinking that he may be privy to some inside information. :)

With that being said, with their backs against the wall we're gonna have to count on the Cardinals and Jaime Garcia to battle back tonight at Busch. No question if you're going to make a play on St. Louis' talented southpaw it has to come at home, where he's been as nasty as they come, going 9-5 with a 2.45 ERA this season (including a WHIP of 1.10) Garcia's turn in Game Two at home last week was as solid as could be-- 7 scoreless innings pitched, 3 hits allowed, no runs and 7 strike outs in a no-decision as the bullpen blew the lead in the ninth. As you already know, Colby Lewis was the opposing starter in that game.

This series has gone back-and-forth, and I guess BF66 just doesn't see Texas winning three in a row to clinch their first-ever World Series title, so we're riding with him and the Cardinals to hold off elimination.

Final score:

Cardinals--5  Rangers--3

World Series Game 5: Rematch time

Sorry WSH fans, we missed getting our blog out for games 3 and 4 due to work schedule on Saturday and a little R&R yesterday.

For the record, we picked the Rangers and over the run total of 9.5 in game 3. As you already know, the Rangers were pounded, mainly due to a heavy dose of Albert Pujols and his record tying 3 home runs in that game. Final score: Cards-16 Rangers-7. Last night in game 4 we went with the Rangers again(if you read one of our earlier blogs, Texas hasn't lost 2 straight games since Aug 23-25) and under the run total of 10. We scooped as Derek Holland pitched an absolute gem, allowing just 2 hits over 8-1/3 innings in a 4-0 shutout to even the series at two games apiece.

Now, on to tonight...

It's rematch time: Game 1 pitted aces Chris Carpenter and C.J. Wilson against each other in St Louis and ended up an exciting 3-2 Cardinals win. The two aces will square off again in a pivotal Game 5, this time in the hitter-friendly Rangers Ballpark. This has been a see-saw series as the teams have alternated wins, starting with the Cards in game 1. If everything were to hold true you would say it's St Louis' turn to win, and if you are looking to establish a crucial series lead before heading home, what better man to have on the mound than Chris Carpenter? The Cardinals have won all four of his starts in the 2011 postseason.

With that being said, we here at World Series Heroes headquarters are going to throw caution to the wind and once again we are going with the Rangers, as we see C.J. Wilson getting the better of Carpenter. Carp got the better of Wilson in Game 1, but we're expecting an even better effort from Wilson in Game 5 at home. It's not like he even pitched that poorly in Game 1... he just got out-dueled and the Rangers lost 3-2. We can say with confidence, it was not Wilson's fault they lost that game. And knowing how important it is to win the final game on your home field, it will place even more urgency on the Rangers bats to get on Carpenter early. If they fall behind in the count against him tonight like they did in Game 1....they're in trouble. But we think the Rangers learned from that and will be looking to swing early in the count.....hopefully when he's throwing fastballs !?  :)

Also remember, Wilson might be playing for a new contract in 2012, so it's time to step up !  Expect this to be a close game, but we think the Rangers win by a run or two.

Final score: Rangers--5 Cardinals--3

ps....the posted run total is 8 and we have the final score landing on that number. Unlike some other sites that like to claim who and what they had after the fact, we like to disclose everything beforehand so you know what we are playing...win or lose ?! It's called not being afraid to put your balls out there, whether you're right or wrong. We're right more than we're wrong so we don't mind. So, for the record we flipped a coin-lol and we will be playing the over and hoping we are a little off on our final score prediction and that the Rangers bats get us a few more runs. Go Texas !!

History on their side !?

Chris Carpenter and five relievers combined for a narrow 3-2 home win in Game 1 of the 2011 World Series and it may have given St. Louis a bigger advantage than most people might think. 20 of the last 25 titles have gone to the team that went up 1-0.

Who will win game 2 ?

The Cardinals may have history on their side, but this is just one game, so we here at World Series Heroes headquarters say it will be the Rangers who get their bats unpacked and square this series at one game apiece as they go up against Jaime Garcia who is 0-2 in three post season starts with an ERA of 5.74 as he's allowed 19 hits and walked five in 15.2 innings of work.

The Rangers will counter with Colby Lewis, who pitched much better on the road than at home this season, compiling a 3.43 ERA and 9-5 record in 17 starts. He is 4-1 lifetime in the playoffs.

The Rangers were handcuffed at the plate last night with just two runs and six hits, but Texas has too much offensive firepower to be silenced for a second straight night, plus they haven't lost two straight games since August 23-25 and that's the type of number you want to hang your hat on as a 'capper and bettor.

We were gonna go with the shut out, but we'll give the Cards 1 for showing up-

Final score: Texas-6  St Louis-1

Fairytale finish for the Cards ?

Deep into August they were 10 ½ games behind in the NL Wild Card race – now they’re about to start the World Series with home-field advantage ! The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to end one of the wildest rides in recent MLB history by crowning themselves world champions. Are you backing the Cards to top the Rangers ?

Although we have written that we believe the Cardinals have the best player in baseball in Albert Pujols, we here at World Series Heroes headquarters will be going with the Rangers based on the fact we believe they have the best lineup top to bottom, plus there is something to be said about the 'hungry' factor, as they went to the World Series last year and were beaten. That sour taste is probably still lingering in their mouths and we think there is enough motivation and experience to get the job done this time around !?

As always we like to give you our thoughts on each of the games, so here we go with game one:

Normally we break down the numbers and give a side to lean to, but in this case we are throwing everything out the window and going on just a pure hunch. C.J. Wilson is squaring off against Chris Carpenter and Carpenter's October numbers are better, as Wilson has an ERA over 8 and Carpenter's is just under 4. The hunch is that Wilson will bring his A game tonight and give his team a shot to pull out a game one victory.

Final score: Rangers-5 Cardinals-2

Also, we want to give our pick for Series MVP. The logical pick is Josh Hamilton(3.5-1) if you think the Rangers will win it all, or Pujols(3.5-1) if you think the Cards take it. We will go with Ian Kinsler as he has a little better price(6-1) at the betting window.

Cards holding the aces ?

With five RBIs from Albert Pujols leading the charge, the Cardinals ended Milwaukee’s home playoff run in emphatic style on Monday to take home-field advantage in the NLCS. Who are you backing in Game 3 on Wednesday ? St. Louis to keep the momentum going in front of its own fans, or the Brew Crew on the road ?

We here at World Series Heroes headquarters are gonna side and ride the pitching of Chris Carpenter as the St. Louis Cardinals go up in their best-of-seven series tonight at Busch Stadium.

Carpenter is fresh off a division series clinching three-hit shutout of the Philadelphia Phillies, as he improved to 4-0 over his last seven starts. In four of those seven starts, Carpenter has not allowed a run to score ! Bottom line, Carpenter gives his team a chance to win when he steps on the mound, and he will give them a chance to win once again tonight.

Yovani Gallardo has been Milwaukee's go-to guy, but Gallardo's road numbers are not nearly as impressive as his work at home this season, as Gallardo is just 7-8 away from home with an over 4 road ERA.

The Brewers are also 1-7 in Gallardo's last eight assignments versus St. Louis. Those are not winning numbers where I come from.

We say take the Redbirds to go up 2-1 in the series with the win behind their "ace" tonight at home.

The winner takes it all !

Now this is what the fans want to see: The Yankees ripped Detroit 10-1 in Game 4 on Tuesday to set up a winner-take-all spectacular in Game 5 tonight. And now, the seasons of two teams that combined to win 192 regular-season games will come down to just one. It will be a rematch of game 1 starters, Ivan Nova for the Yanks and Doug Fister for the Tigers. Who are you backing to hold their nerve and book a ticket to the ALCS against the waiting Rangers?

We here at World Series Heroes headquarters don't really have a solid feel for this game. The Yankees fought all year to get home field advantage and would like to see it pay off, however, history slightly favors the Tigers. Road teams are 8-6 in Division Series Game 5's (factoring in the AL and National League) since baseball went to the eight-team playoff format in 1995. And the Yanks haven't won a decisive game (be it a Game 7 or a Game 5) since Aaron Boone connected off Boston's Tim Wakefield in Game 7 of the 2003 AL Championship Series.

As the writer and creator of this blog, I should note that I am a Yankee fan and have been since a little kid, so I will definitely be pulling for them. Personally, I will not have a stake in this game, but we always like to look at the numbers and give our thoughts. It's pretty tough to go against a pitcher(Nova) who hasn't lost since June, but he is a rookie and from a bettors perspective it's hard to ignore the numbers that Fister put up in the final two months of the season. The 27-year-old right-hander ranked first in the AL in ERA (1.79), second to Verlander for the league lead in wins (eight) and led all Major League pitchers in strikeout-to-walk ratio (11.40). So, we will give a slight lean toward the Tigers and their 6'-8" pitcher Doug Fister, who struggled and lost game 1 of this series, but overall has been a rock for Detroit.

Here's to hoping this is one time we're wrong !? :)

Cards need Jackson’s ace game!

It’s all or nothing for the Cardinals after losing Game 3 to the Phillies at Busch Stadium on Tuesday. The hosts turn to Edwin Jackson for Game 4 and he will need to turn it on in his first ever postseason start when dueling Roy Oswalt on the mound. Are you expecting St. Louis to keep its season alive? We here at World Series headquarters believe they will be heading back to Philly for game 5 !?

Something’s gotta give !?!

Baseball fans across the country are looking forward to the next installment of the Sabathia – Verlander duel when the Tigers entertain the Yankees in Game 3 tonight. Friday’s first meeting between the AL’s winningest pitchers fell flat due to the rain, but everything is geared up for a fascinating contest at Comerica Park today. Who are you expecting to take a crucial series lead ? We here at World Series Heroes headquarters think it will be Verlander's night !?

Fantasy Ballers--DraftStreet

For all you Fantasy ballers,

If you haven't heard yet, there is a new form of sportsbetting that is catching the attention of some real gamblers… Introducing: Daily fantasy sports on DraftStreet. The site is less than a year old, but the action is really starting to pick up and I see this industry offering an opportunity for some significant earning potential to the more skilled players.

Link: http://www.draftstreet.com/register.aspx?r=73b7485

DraftStreet sets prices based on projected fantasy value each day and your mission is to find the bargains and make the best team possible within the budget. With $100k and 8 spots your average guy will cost you $12,500, so if you want to take a guy like Aaron Rodgers for $19k, you're going to have to find a couple bargains as well.

Possibly the most intriguing thing about this new industry is that 'fantasy sports' is not considered gambling under US law, but is specifically singled out as a 'skill game'. Every contest offered on DraftStreet is 100% legal in the US. That means they are able to offer paypal and all credit cards. Why would sportsbetting and poker be considered gambling but not fantasy sports ? Don't ask me, I don't make the law. But the fact is, the games on DraftStreet definitely require skill and it's a great place to put your knowledge to the test, and in the process you might just make a little 'jack' !?

Once again, here is the link to follow:

Europe looking to conquer Vegas !

The world’s most prestigious poker event has reached its final table and the WSOP Main Event final nine has a distinct European flavor to it. The tournament reaches its climax in November with five Europeans battling it out for the top prize. The Czech Republic’s Martin Staszko leads the chip count with 40.175 million, with Ireland’s Eoghan O’Dea close behind on 33.925. German Pius Heinz, Ukraine’s Anton Makievskyi and England’s Samuel Holden are also still in the mix, while America’s three remaining representatives mean the US-contingent at the final table is the smallest ever. There is no player with a runaway lead for the first time since 2008 and for the first time in the history of the November Nine format no player will begin the final table with less that 10 million in chips.

It promises to be fun – but who will take the title and become a World Series Hero !?

1972 World Series Hero--Gene Tenace

After hitting only five home runs in the 1972 regular season, Gene Tenace became an overnight superstar by becoming the first player in World Series history to hit home runs in his first two World Series at bats. He went on to drive in all three runs in a 3-2 game one win over the Cincinnati Reds. With slugger Reggie Jackson out of the series with an injury, Tenace filled the void and helped lead the A’s to victory. During the seven game series, Tenace hit four home runs and drove in nine runs. In the decisive seventh game, he drove in two runs in a 3-2 victory that lifted the A’s to the first of their three straight world championships.

His tremendous performance in the 1972 World Series proved to be just what the former back-up catcher needed to be propelled to the next level. Tenace had never played in more than 82 games during his first four major league seasons, but from 1973-75 played in at least 158 games each season.

In 1973, Tenace played in a career-high 160 games, including 134 at first base while hitting 24 home runs, driving in 84 runs and walking 101 times. While the A’s won another World Series, Tenace didn’t have the same impact he did the prior year, as he hit .158 with no home runs and three RBI. Interestingly, Tenace walked 11 times during the series, but never scored a run.

The following season, Tenace again saw action at both first base and catcher. He increased his home run total to 26 and walked 110 times, but his batting average plummeted from .259 to .211. He played in five of the seven World Series games and hit .222 with no RBI as the A’s edged the Dodgers.

For the first time since becoming a regular, Tenace played in more games as a catcher than at first base during the 1975 campaign. He earned his only All-Star Game selection while hitting .255 and setting career-highs with 29 home runs and 87 RBI. The A’s lost in the AL Playoffs to Boston and Tenace didn’t have a hit in nine at bats. The 1976 season would be the last one for Tenace in Oakland as the A’s were in the process of dismantling their dynasty. He hit .249 with 22 home runs and 66 RBI and actually received AL MOVP votes for the only time in his career as he finished 18th in the voting.

Following the 1976 season, Tenace and closer Rollie Fingers signed free agent contracts with the San Diego Padres. After making little more than $40,000 in Oakland, Tenace signed a six-year, $1.815 million contract that would pay him more than $300,000 annually for six years. Tenace spent four seasons playing for the Padres and played in at least 133 games in each campaign. He led the National League with 125 walks in 1977 and earned at least 100 free passes in three of his four seasons with the Padres. He hit between 15 and 20 home runs each year, but never reached the power levels he displayed in Oakland.

Traded to the St. Louis Cardinals prior to the 1981 season, Tenace’s days as an every-day player were over. He spent two seasons in St. Louis and hit a total of 12 home runs with 40 RBI as the backup catcher. He did return to the World Series with the Cardinals in 1982 and earned his fourth ring, though he didn’t get a hit in six plate appearances. Tenace completed his career with one season in Pittsburgh as their backup catcher.

During his 15 year career, Tenace hit .241 with 201 home runs, 674 RBI and 984 walks.
He went on to a successful career as a hitting coach, including earning two additional World Series rings with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1992 and 1993.

But, Tenace will forever be known for one week in 1972 when he turned the baseball world around with his power and timely hitting, becoming a World Series Hero and lifting the A’s to their first-ever World Series title.

1956--An Amazing Feat

Today we go back in time to October 8, 1956 and take a look at World Series Hero Don Larsen's perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers.(just for the record it was game 5) It still stands as the only perfect game in World Series history. What's amazing to me is the fact that when he strikes out the last batter Dale Mitchell, he just walks off the mound with hardly any emotion !? The scene of Yogi running out and jumping on him is a classic though. It was a magical day to say the least, and what a great 'World Series Heroes' moment !

Almost 43 years later on July 18, 1999, Larsen returned to Yankee Stadium to celebrate Yogi Berra Day, where he threw out the ceremonial first pitch to his former catcher. Larsen and Berra must have brought that magic with them and left some on the field that Sunday afternoon when they went to watch the game from the stands. They witnessed an unbelievable tribute, as pitcher David Cone became the third Yankee to throw a perfect game. Pretty magical stuff...

The Boys of Summer 2

Yesterday we semi broke down the AL and gave you our pick to go to the World Series. Today we will breakdown the NL and give our nod to which team moves on to the 'Fall Classic'. Staying to form we will start in the East where there will be only two teams worth mentioning, the obvious Phillies and the always competitive Braves. As I mentioned, the Phils are the obvious as they have the best pitching with three of their starters, Halladay, Hamels, and Lee in the top 10 in ERA and wins at the midway point. They also account for 31 of the Phils 57 wins. Right there with them though are the Braves, with a pretty darn good staff themselves. Two, Jurrgens and Hanson are in the top 3 in ERA and wins. Then you have Tim Hudson and Derek Lowe who can hold their own. With that said, we still think it will be the Phillies in the East, barring any major injuries to that staff.

In the Central we see a good race unfolding with the Brewers and Cards. The Pirates are only a game back but we just don't see them there down the stretch. Forget about the Cubbies and who's that other team ? In the end it's pretty much a toss up, but we'll give the nod to the Cards who arguably have the best player in baseball with Pujols.

How the West is won once again, is with shut down pitching. And that would be your defending Champion San Francisco Giants. I know some out there would argue that they don't have the offense to keep them in the hunt, but they should have Posey back and I think their bats will be there down the stretch(going on a hunch). Here is a division that quite honestly intrigues me, as I can't figure out the Rockies(8.5 games back) or Dodgers(11 games back). I really thought the Rockies would be much better than they have been playing, especially their offense. The Dodgers are all together another issue, as they have two players in the top 10 in hitting(avg) and two pitchers, Kershaw and Kuroda in the top 10 in pitching(ERA). Probably too much turmoil and uncertainty in LA !? Oh, I almost forgot to mention the team that currently sits in second place, the DBacks. They are a scrappy team and will be right there contending, but the nod still goes to the Giants.

So, for the playoffs we are going with the Phillies, Cards, Giants, and our Wild Card will be the Braves. Our nod to represent the NL in the 'Fall Classic' will be, drum roll please...once again, the San Francisco Giants ! You now have our picks for the 2011 'Fall Classic'. We now wonder who might join that list of 'Fall Classic' legends, and become 'World Series Heroes' themselves ?!?

The Boys of Summer

Ah, the Wednesday before the start of  baseball's 2nd half of an already long and grueling season. It might just be the most uninteresting day of the year as far as sports is concerned(except for the US women's soccer match) But it's only one day so tomorrow they will be right back at it. As we look back at the 1st half of the season, we want to give out our early frontrunners for the 'Fall Classic'. But before we do, congratulations go out to Derek Jeter on joining the 3,000 hit club, the only Yankee player to have done it. He is also only the 11th player in history to get to 3,000 hits all while playing for the same team, quite an accomplishment.

After starting the season like a bear still in hibernation, the RedSox have turned into a full grown Momma grizzly who just caught wind of someone trying to harm her cubs. They are kicking ass and taking names, and I don't see anyone in the East getting by them, except maybe the Yankees who can swing the lumber with the best of them. They still have the best closer in the game and you always have the Boston/NY rivalry, so I give them a nod as to maybe the one team that can make a run at the Sox. The Rays have good pitching and defense, but unless they find some miracle potion for their bats, they won't be able to hang. The Blue Jays have big bats, but too inconsistent. The Orioles, all around inconsistent.

Out of the AL Central I see the Tigers having the most to offer, with decent bats and a little better than decent pitching. The AL West should be a good fight, but I see the Rangers on top once again. The A's have very good pitching but way too inconsistent bats. The Mariners will fade. The Angels are a decent club, but I just see the Rangers having more down the stretch.

Come playoff time it's a whole new season, but as I see it the RedSox will be coming out of the AL. You now have our AL pick for the 'Fall Classic'. Tomorrow we will break down the NL.
